Japan trip: Apps that could save you!
ecbo cloak
Ecbo Cloak is an app that allows people to drop off their luggage or large bags while touring the area. Although Japan typically has coin lockers in train stations, they can be full during the tourist season. To avoid the hassle of finding an available locker, simply book through the app and drop off your bags at a designated location.
DiDi
The DiDi app is a popular ride-hailing service similar to Uber and Lyft, originating from China but is used among Japanese taxi service companies. However, many rural areas of Japan do not use online taxi services, so to arrange for vehicle transportation, you need to call them directly.
Suica & PASMO
Suica and Pasmo are rechargeable smart cards used for electronic payments on public transportation in Japan, such as trains, buses, and subways. They can also be used for purchases at vending machines, convenience stores, and other locations that accept electronic payments. Suica is issued by JR East, while Pasmo is issued by private railway, subway, and bus operators in the Tokyo area. Both cards are interoperable, meaning they can be used interchangeably across different transportation networks and stores.
Due to the current unavailability of physical Suica and Pasmo cards, we recommend adding them to your smartphone. You can easily set it up using mobile payment apps like Apple Pay or Google Pay. This allows you to use your phone just like a Suica card and Pasmo card for transportation and purchases, providing a convenient and seamless experience.
If you can’t decide which card to add, read below…
While Suica is widely accepted across most of Japan’s transportation networks, there are a few exceptions where Suica cannot be used for transportation:
1. Certain Rural or Regional Lines: Some local and regional train lines, especially in more remote or rural areas, may not accept Suica.
2. Specific Non-JR Lines: While most major non-JR lines accept Suica, there may be some smaller private railway companies or specific lines that do not.
3. Some Bus Services: Although many bus services accept Suica, there are some regional or local bus operators that do not.
4. Transportation Outside Japan: Suica cannot be used for transportation services outside Japan, although there are a few exceptions in certain cities with reciprocal agreements, like in Hong Kong with the Octopus card.
1. Certain Rural or Regional Lines: Some local and regional train lines, especially in more remote or rural areas, may not accept Pasmo.
2. Specific Non-Pasmo Affiliated Lines: Some smaller private railway companies or specific lines may not accept Pasmo.
3. Some Bus Services: Although many bus services accept Pasmo, there are some regional or local bus operators that do not.
4. Transportation Outside Japan: Pasmo cannot be used for transportation services outside Japan.
Overall, if you are up for exploring Tokyo with no problem, I would have both Suica and Pasmo on my wallet. However, Pasmo is the safest option in my opinion.
